A manufacturer of biodiesel from rapeseed, sunflower and similar oils based in Germany has recently sourced a comprehensive instrument solution from Endress+Hauser that involved Promass, Evolution Pressure and Liquid Analytical products.
Involving 13 TMT184 Profibus transmitters, the project marked a shift away from an alternative brand of transmitters to the Endress+Hauser range, based specifically on the ease of configuration offered by the TMT range.
Through re-esterification with methanol to obtain rapeseed methyl ester, the producer is able to supply motor fuel meeting the specifications relating to DIN 51606. The re-esterification process takes place in two stages downstream of two reactors designed as mixers, settlers and phase separators. Through intimate mixing of the reactants, it is possible to achieve maximum conversion rates at relatively short retention times. The methyl ester produced is washed and dried into a finished end-product, whereas the glycerine phase is treated with methanol water and can be processed into pharmaceutical grade glycerine. This continuous process ensures constantly high product quality and boasts low catalyst consumption. Moreover, the process is easy to control and warrants high conversion and yield rates.
Installed on a skid that was shipped to an existing plant, the TMT184s head transmitters are 2-wire transmitters with measurement inputs for resistance thermometers and resistance transmitters in 2-, 3- or 4-wire connections, thermocouples and voltage transmitters. Setup was done using the PROFIBUS-PA protocol, combined with a PC operating software (e.g. Fieldcare).
